Warmup 3.7.12 The (rapid) decline of the media industry

Summary: This article is about the rapid decline of the media industry over the past few years when mostly talking about newspapers, newsrooms and giving percentages of how many people still read the paper, whether online or in person.

I feel like the decline of the media industry is in part of because how technology has advanced. People don't feel the need to read the papers or watch the news anymore now with social applications such as twitter and facebook, where people can get all the up-to-date news through notifications on their mobile phones.

An advantage I think is that people now can read the latest breaking news on the go and much more easily, instead of having to wait every morning for the newspapers to find out what happened since the day before. Another advantage is that it can save people money in that they don't have to pay monthly subscriptions for the daily newspaper or for news and entertainment magazines.

In my opinion I don't think there needs to be a 'solution', because as technology evolves it makes sense that outdated methods and items become obsolete, it works with everything else (Cell phones, TVs, Computers etc.) and there's no reason newspapers should be an exception.

A disadvantage is that it's putting newspapers and media outlets out of business, newspaper companies who have been around for years and years successfully are now dealing with rapidly declining numbers of subscribers and readers each year, forcing them to keep down-sizing to help save and budget money and to budget also makes newspaper companies cut people's jobs

Warmup: White House Outlines Online Privacy Guidelines

Link to article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/23/business/white-house-outlines-online-privacy-guidelines.html?_r=1

Summary: President Obama has moved to help start creating guidelines that will help people using the internet have some control over what personal information about them is seen or public. People will have a privacy option which is where they can set limits to who is searching for information about them and what information about them can be publicly viewed.

Benefits: A benefit to companies collecting online user data is that it kind of serves as a group survey, by checking online user data companies can see what parts of their company are the most used while being able to see by the data, what are some parts of the company that aren't used as much and can help figure out a way to improve that certain area for the better.

I don't believe the guidelines are necessary, but they are useful by serving as a good step toward listening to people who may feel like they want to have more protection online and be able to be in control when it comes to their personal data being able to be viewed.

Warmup: Education

Technology: Ipad (Handheld Digital Device)

How is this technology used? An Ipad can be used in a variety of ways in the education sector. An example from personal experience is that here at Washington-Lee we have a few classrooms where teachers have a cart of Ipads for students to use as a subsitute for computers. They are much more convinient and take up less space in the classroom than computers and have all the same basic capabilities such as Internet access that can be used when doing research for a project.

Advantages: Technology, like an Ipad, is much easier and useful for students when it comes to things such as research. A textbook and an Ipad are about the same size, but with an Ipad students can find multiple sources faster and easier than the time it would take them to scan through big textbooks looking for the same information.

Disadvantages: An Ipad, with capabilities such as internet access and the option of installing games and apps can provide more of a distraction to students than a teaching tool, with that being said, if there are students who get easily distracted than they would get LESS work done with the Ipad as opposed to a stack of textbooks holding the same information.

Social & Ethical Issues: People and Machines can be a big factor, because while many kids in this day of age are tech savvy there are some kids who have never used an Ipad or any kind of similar technology, so to take the time out to go over how to use an Ipad could take away from valuable class time the teachers might have needed.
